PASSENGER RAILWAYS IN WORTHINGTON 1851-1933 FALL LECTURE
Wed, November 10, 2010
7:00pm to 8:30pm
Columbus is the largest metropolitan area in North America without any rail passenger service. Ohio is the most populous state with no convenient daylight passenger trains. Worthington has not had passenger rail service since 1933, the last year a regular passenger train stopped in Worthington.
The 82-year period between 1851 and 1933 when Worthington did have rail-based passenger service will be the topic at the November 10th general meeting of the Worthington Historical Society. Ryan Hoover a WHS trustee and Alex Campbell who hosts www.columbusrailroads.com will use photos, descriptions and story-telling to tell us about the one steam and two electric passenger railways serving Worthington travelers and commuters in those 82 years. In 1851 the first railroad through Worthington was The Cleveland Columbus & Cincinnati Railroad, later Cleveland Columbus Cincinnati & St Louis or "The Big Four Route". The others in turn were The Worthington and Columbus Street Railway Co. in 1891, The Sandusky and Columbus Short Line Railway Co. in 1893, later Pennsylvania RR, and The Columbus Delaware and Marion Electric Co. Railway in 1903. They will also talk about the Ohio Railway Museum, located on the former CD&M line, which preserves at least two electric trolley cars which once served Worthington.
Although little has been recorded about Worthington passenger rail history, Alex Campbell has compiled one of the best overviews of how things were in Worthington and Columbus in the 1891 to 1933 period. Join us for a brief meeting followed by the presentation. Open to the public, with free admission.
This is a joint event with the Griswold Center.

DOLL MUSEUM SPECIAL EXHIBITION: PARADE OF DOLL HOMES
Fri, May 1, 2009 Sat, October 30, 2010
The Parade of Doll Homes is now open!
The newest exhibition at The Doll Museum at The Old Rectory is now open during gift shop hours for your enjoyment. Iconic dollhouses from Gottschalk, McLoughlin, Bliss, Rich, Marx and others as well as several homemade houses and their furnishings illustrate the "miniature" domestic life of various eras from the early 1900's onward. A WHS member has donated three houses from her collection, one house was purchased from the doll fund, and a local collector has loaned two houses to complement those already in the collection. Come see, remember, and learn about life in miniature!
The exhibition is part of the Doll Museum, which features classic dolls from the 18th and 19th centuries. Tours are self-guided. Docent-led tours and special children’s programs are available by appointment.

About the Orange Johnson House—
This property offers a unique view of both the pioneer and antebellum periods in Worthington. The oldest portion was built in 1811 by Arora Buttles. The six-room house was on thirty-five acres, part of a choice farm lot next to the village. The pioneer architecture can be seen in the low-ceilinged rooms and the dogleg staircase to the second story. The kitchen has the original fireplace with a large iron crane where the pioneers did their cooking.
In 1816 Orange Johnson, a hornsmith who specialized in comb-making bought the property. He added a stately Federal-style addition high-lighted by an elegant fanlight entry. The addition faced west toward the road that was becoming the main route [now High St.] between the new state capital and Lake Erie.
Surrounded by period furnishings, costumed guides describe the everyday pursuits of the early Worthington settlers. Visitors will learn about the comb making trade and see a collection of 19th century women's hair combs and comb making tools.
