ORANGE JOHNSON HOUSE ANNUAL OPENING
Sun, April 11, 2010
2:00pm to 5:00pm
Visit the Orange Johnson House Museum and step back into
nineteenth-century Worthington - into one of the oldest residences standing in its original location in central Ohio.
This property offers a unique view of both the pioneer and antebellum
periods in Worthington. The oldest portion was built in 1811 by Arora Buttles. The six-room house was on thirty-five acres, part of a choice farm lot next to the village. The pioneer architecture can be seen in the low-ceilinged keeping room with it's solid walnut wainscoting and steep dogleg staircase to the second story. The kitchen has the original walk-in type fireplace with a large iron crane and bread oven.
In 1816 Orange Johnson, a hornsmith who specialized in comb-making
bought the property. He added a stately Federal-style addition
high-lighted by the gracious entry with its curved fanlight, sidelights and delicately reeded pilasters leading to a center hall. Each of the four principal rooms flanking this hall contains a fireplace with handsome mantle. The addition faced west
toward the road that was becoming the main route [now High St.] between the new state capital and Lake Erie.
Surrounded by period furnishings, costumed guides describe the
everyday pursuits of the early Worthington settlers. Visitors will learn about the comb making trade and see a collection of 19th century women's hair combs and comb making tools.
Please come visit the new exhibition “Essential Accessories” at the Orange Johnson House, which features the full range of necessities and embellishments from head to toe: caps, hats, parasols, reticules, purses and shoes – everything that women wore to complement their gowns in the 19th and 20th century. Also, one of our members has donated some reproduction pieces that the children may try on. We hope that everyone will come and enjoy yet another aspect of our distinguished clothing collection.
Also in the exhibition rooms on the lower level we are featuring Early
Worthington Objects: From the Beginning. This exhibition begins the
timeline of Worthington history with a collection of Native American
artifacts then continues forward with a display of objects from the
first decades of pioneer settlement.

12:30pm to 5:30pm
The Home and Garden Tour for 2010 will be full of "wow!" The Worthington Historical Society Home and Garden Tour 2010 will visit the historic Colonial Hills neighborhood of Worthington. Our tour will tell the story of the evolution of the neighborhood, from the first phase in the early 1940’s through the last phase in the late 1950’s. To round out the tour, George Campbell, president of the Colonial Hills Civic Association, will give a presentation on the history of Colonial Hills at one of the homes.
In the early 1940s, the original plat for Colonial Hills and Dales was to be a community to house workers for the Curtis Wright aircraft plant. They were to be partially pre-fabricated at a minimum cost of $5400. By the beginning of 1943, the first phase of 50 homes were ready to be rented out and the Defense Homes Corporation was planning a total of 184 two bedroom and 16 three bedroom more homes to be available to rent. At war’s end, these were sold to their renter occupants or war veterans.
Tour tickets may be purchased in advance at the Old Rectory or Fritzy Jacobs (for times and addresses see additional info. below) through July 11th at a reduced rate of $10.00 each. On tour day, July 12th, tickets will be available at the Old Rectory, Fritzy Jacobs and Selby Shelter House at $12 each.
