Latin Music

El Calido Viento, flute and guitar

El Calido Viento offers a cultural journey through the musical styles Latin American and Spain.
Rodolfo Vazquez, flutist, has been touring extensively as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles in the U.S., Mexico, and England. He has been awarded once by the Greater Columbus Arts Council and three times by the Ohio Arts Council with grants for CD recordings of Latin, original, and classical music. Craig Goodwin, guitar, is now one of the most sought-after guitarists in the Midwest, performing over 300 concerts a year. He is currently finishing his second CD recording of compositions for guitar and has ensemble recordings ranging from children’s to jazz to Latin.



West Indian Music

The Columbus Caribbean Steeldrum Orchestra

A lively steel drum music demonstration that is sure to leave its audience feeling as though they have just returned from a visit to one of the many Caribbean Islands. Deighton Charlemagne is the leader of the Columbus Caribbean Steeldrum Orchestra and a musician of 24 years. From a very young age, he has been spreading the traditions of his homeland, St. Lucia West Indies, through music. For over two decades, he has been playing the steel drums, which originated in the islands, as well as singing reggae music. His firsthand knowledge of island life, along with all of his musical talent, enables him to teach about Caribbean history and its music with great ease and interest.

GA-LI

GA-LI presents folktales from Native American and Latin American traditions as well as original music, poetry and stories.



Russian Storytelling


Misha Feigin, storytelling with music

Misha performs original and traditional Russian and American music in both English and Russian, and tells of his experiences in Russia’s recent struggle for freedom. His performance includes exciting storytelling about oppression, and the quest for liberty and unity of people everywhere, regardless of nationality and race. Misha Feigin was born and raised in Moscow and acclaimed as one of the best guitarists in Russia today.



Japanese Taiko Drumming

Eric "The Fish" Paton

A multicultural percussion assembly featuring dynamic Taiko. Taiko is the festival drumming brought to Japan by the Buddhist monks and made famous by the Kodo drummers of Sado Island. Experience the culture surrounding the music through language, chant, song, and concert formalities. Eric Paton spent his childhood in Tokyo, where he attended Japanese elementary school and an International School representing thirty-four nationalities. As his interest in music grew, his global experience drew him toward different music styles of the world.



Eastern and Western European Music, Dance, and Song


New Europa Troubadours

This educational and entertaining show features 3 performers presenting the music, dances, customs, costumes, history and culture of both Eastern and Western Europe, with special emphasis on the lesser-known peoples such as Bulgarians, Macedonians, Croatians, Basques, Bretons, Romanians & Gypsies.



Southeast Asian Mythology and Movement

Sultana Nahar

Sultana Nahar graduated on "Bharata Natyam", one of the most elegant and complicated forms of classical Indian dance. She is a well-known performer in Bangladeshi and Indian communities in the Midwest and Eastern half of the United States. Her dance programs were telecast from national television of Bangladesh and local TV stations in Chicago. Sultana performed in numerous local Asian Festivals and international programs (such as the U.N. Festival) in many states as well as Ohio. With colorful costumes, beautiful jewelry, and lilting music, Sultana presents the audience with an authentic flavor and charming experience of Southeast Asian cultural heritage.



American Jazz Standards and Original Music

Mary Daniels and Moxie

Mary Daniels and Moxie ignite the scene with hot new interpretations of jazz standards by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonius Monk, and Duke Ellington. Then they dazzle with more contemporary artists, like Sade, David Sanborn, and Grover Washington, Jr. Then they fuink it up and rock out with Santana, Booker T, and the MG’s, and blues standards. Finish this off with stellar originals. All this blends together into a sweet, soulful full-band sound of impressive variety. Mary Daniels and Moxie present women with a jazz attitude.

Daniels and Moxie will pay tribute to the Worthington bicentennial with a special rendition of "Happy Birthday" during the cake-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. in the middle of their set.



American Jazz Standards & Blues

Just Standard Time

American jazz standards and blues featuring Worthington’s own bandleader Matt Ellis. Big band and jazz fans are familiar with Ellis’ New Remnants Dance Orchestra, a favorite of the Worthington Arts Council’s Jazz Series. Now, Ellis and five fellow musicians jazz it up as Just Standard Time, which has performed throughout Ohio.



Indonesian Classical Dance


Kenchana

The Kenchana group features Becky Lydon, Ni Luh Puspitasari-Nienaber, and Judy Wilaputra. Their dances tell stories though use of their quivering fingers and fans, darting eyes, and their authentic shimmering costumes.



Southern Spanish Dance


Quema Fuego

Quema Fuego represents a collective effort by three of Central Ohio's most talented Flamenco artists to bring high quality Flamenco to the Columbus area. Flamenco is an ancient gypsy art form that draws from the many cultures that settled in southern Spain. It is the vehicle through which the gypsies found expression for their sorrow, anger, joy and love. Since the birth of Flamenco, people from all walks of life have enjoyed its gift of expression. Quema Fuego's exhilarating blend of traditional and contemporary Flamenco song and dance holds audiences spellbound from the moment they begin.



Additional Entertainment


Aerial Acrobats

The Detroit aerialists known as the Aerial Angels, who have appeared at Easton, execute swings with silk sashes from a tall superstructure, presenting a choreographed ballet to recorded music.



International Dance Party (strolling artist)

Marian Funk, accordion, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Marian presents festive music from Europe and North America on the accordion. Accordions are not just for polkas; squeezebox players are in demand as entertainers from Mexico to Macedonia. She performs as a strolling street musician, within the Irish tradition she plays ceili dances and sessions, and she is in demand as a feis musician, providing precise metronomic accompaniment for dance competitions.



Carnival Parades
Carnival-type parades step-off from the U.S. Bank parking lot, every hour on the hour. Festival goers are invited to make crafts at the Fun Shops and join in the parades with their costumes, masks and puppets.

Mimi Chenfeld, Israeli Folk Dance (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 p.m.)
Chenfeld explores mostly older Israeli dances and many international dances. Chenfeld keeps the joy, the adventure — in a word, the FUN — of learning through creative and challenging teaching. No one can deliver this kind of fun better than Mimi Chenfeld can, whose contagious enthusiasm, commitment to the individuality of learning, and inexhaustible storehouse of ideas.
