Wagon Train Itinerary
July 1 - 7
DEPARTURE DATE: Tuesday, July 1.
DIRECTIONS TO THE ENCAMPMENT: The camp is located at the Noah’s Park in Gratiot. From the west- Head eastbound on I-70 to Exit 141 (exit not accessible from westbound I-70). Head north on Rt. 668. Turn right on Rt. 40 and head east for 2 miles. Noah’s Park will be on your left, next to the Gratiot United Methodist Church. Turn left on East St. and then left on South St.
From the east- Head westbound on I-70 to Exit 142 (exit not accessible from eastbound I-70). Head north on Mt. Perry Road. Turn right on Rt. 40 and head east for ½ mile. Noah’s Park will be on your left, next to the Gratiot United Methodist Church. Turn left on East Street and then left on South Street.
ITINERARY: Following breakfast, the wagon train will travel west along US 40 to a morning break at the historic marker in Bowling Green Township. Lunch will be served at the Herb-N-Ewe. The Licking Township Trustees and residents have planned a parade in Jacksontown with light refreshments at a brief stop at US 40 and State Route 13.
The wagon train will set up camp at Lakewood High School A festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. with food, educational programs and entertainment, including square dancing provided by the Hebron and Buckeye Lake historical societies. The event ends at 8:30 p.m.
DEPARTURE DATE: Wednesday, July 2.
DIRECTIONS TO THE ENCAMPMENT: The camp is located at Lakewood High School. From I-70, take exit 129 (Rt. 79). Head north on Rt. 79 to Rt. 40. Lakeview High School is 2 miles east of Rt. 79 on Rt. 40. The school will be on your right.
ITINERARY: Following breakfast, the wagon train will travel into Hebron where a parade will be held. The Hebron Village has planned a brief plaque/dedication ceremony in honor of Hebron Mill. Light refreshments will be served. Lunch will be held at Pigeon Roost Farm, a historic working farm on the old National Road, one mile east of Kirkersville. Demonstrations will include old-time crafts, such as quilting, weaving and candle-making, wood carving, and basket making. Also included are kettle cooked food, dulcimer music, farrier, period antiques and goat milking.
From the farm, the wagon train will pass through Kirkersville and proceed to the encampment at Watkins Memorial High School. Evening events will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m, include old-time children’s games, animal petting area, band and choral music, wool spinning and a display of historical items.
DEPARTURE DATE: Thursday, July 3.
DIRECTIONS TO THE ENCAMPMENT: The camp is located at Watkins Memorial High School. From I-70, take exit 129 (Rt. 158). Head north on Rt. 158 to Rt. 40. Turn left on Rt. 40 (west). Just under 2 miles, turn right on Watkins Road. (There is a sign at the corner for Watkins Memorial High School and Middle School.) The schools will be on the left. The Middle School is the school closer to the road.
ITINERARY: Following breakfast, the wagon train will proceed to Etna Corporate Park for a brief break and then complete its trip through Licking County with lunch at the Department of Agriculture. The train will proceed to Reynoldsburg along Route 40, taking a break at the Reynoldsburg VFW on Waggoner Road, and then go north on Lancaster Avenue to Reynoldsburg Civic Park where camp will be set up. The Reynoldsburg Rotary Club will host dinner. During the evening entertainment will include the Cornerstone bluegrass gospel, Reynoldsburg Community Band, Tartan Day - Bag Pipes, performing arts students and representatives of Slate Ridge Historical Farm.
DEPARTURE DATE: Friday, July 4.
DIRECTIONS TO THE ENCAMPMENT: The camp is located at Reynoldsburg Civic Park. From I-70, head north on I-270 (east side of Columbus). Take the exit for Broad Street – 16 E. Newark. Travel east on Broad Street for less than 2 miles. Turn right on Reynoldsburg New Albany Road (AKA Lancaster Avenue); head south on Reynoldsburg New Albany Road for about 1/2 mile. Turn right on to Daugherty Drive and follow it into Civic Park.
ITINERARY: After breakfast, the wagon train proceeds north along Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road, taking a break at the Jefferson Township Fire Department. The train continues to New Albany where it stops for lunch at New Albany Middle School and then proceeds to Blendon Woods Park for the evening’s encampment. In New Albany, there will be an all-community picnic featuring a petting zoo with farm animals, storytellers, musicians and a bicentennial artist. At 7:30 p.m. Blendon Woods Park will host an "Old-Times Campfire" where stories and songs from Ohio’s past will be shared. Wagon Train participants will be transported to New Albany later to see the community’s Fourth of July fireworks show.
DEPARTURE DATE: Saturday, July 5.
DIRECTIONS TO THE ENCAMPMENT: The camp is located at Blendon Woods. From I-70- Head north on I-270 (east side of Columbus). Take the exit for Morse Road. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right. After about ½ mile, turn left onto Cherry Bottom Road. Less than a mile north of Morse on the right is the entrance to the Blendon Woods Park.
Access to the Sugarbush Day Camp area, where the encampment will take place, is by way of a ½-mile nature trail. If you have special transportation needs, please call (614) 851-8111 in advance.
ITINERARY: Following breakfast, the wagon train will proceed east on SR 161 (Dublin-Granville Road) to the City of Worthington where it will go north on Proprietors Road, then west on Schrock Road and west on Worthington-Galena Road to High Street. From the Worthington-Galena Road location, the wagon train will be in position to enter Worthington’s Bicentennial Parade. At 10:03 a.m. the parade will begin, led by the wagon train with Governor Bob Taft and Mrs. Taft included among state and local dignitaries. The parade will proceed south along High Street to the Village Green where the wagon train will go west on Dublin-Granville Road to the entrance of Thomas Worthington High School and position itself in the parking area around the flag pole. Lunch will be served at the high school, where a Bicentennial Homecoming Celebration is being held. See Worthington’s Web site for other details of the celebration.
The train will depart later in the afternoon, proceeding south along High Street to the Ohio School for the Blind, where camp will be set up and dinner will be served. At the school, there will be a celebration hosted by the Clintonville community from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring: a historical marker presentation honoring the School for the Blind as the first state-supported school for the blind in the country; cutting of a Bicentennial Birthday cake that serves 1,000 people; musical and dance performances, story telling and drama.
Departure Date: Sunday, July 6
Directions to the Encampment: From I-70, head north on Rt. 315 to Henderson Road. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp and head east for about a 1/2 mile. Turn left (north) on High Street. The Ohio State School for the Blind will be on your right just over 1 mile north of Henderson Road on High Street.
ITINERARY: The wagon train will proceed south on High Street stopping for a break at The Ohio State University. After the break the wagon train will proceed to the Statehouse where members from the Franklin County Bicentennial Association will welcome participants and lunch will be served. Entertainment includes Imaginating Dramatics, and children’s games, re-enactors and a petting zoo from Slate Run Historical Farm. The train moves west on Broad Street. Encampment will be at Ohio Department of Public Safety. Heil's Deli will provide dinner for wagon train participants. The evening’s entertainment is Sylvia Miller and the 1 ore Thyme String Band.
Departure Date: Monday, July 7
Directions to the Encampment: The camp is located at the Public Safety Building in Columbus. From I-70, take exit 97 (W. Broad Street), head west (away from the city). The Public Safety Building will be on the right side. The building is between Rhodes Park and the Twin Valley Hospital; it is the first drive after the park.
ITINERARY: Train travels along Broad Street to Darby Dan Farm/Executive Airport for lunch. Train enters Madison County and heads to West Jefferson for parade activities. Encampment is at West Jefferson High School. (12 miles)
