Worthington's Official Bicentennial Songs

The Bells of Worthington
On the Village Green
Eric Gnezda

The charm that is uniquely Worthington, both past and present, is being brought to life through music with the Official Theme Song of the Worthington Bicentennial Celebration. The Worthington Bicentennial Steering Committee commissioned renowned inspirational speaker, songwriter and Worthington native Eric Gnezda to compose and perform an original piece of music in celebration of Worthington’s 200th birthday. The musical work actually consists of two songs, an anthem called “The Bells of Worthington” and a ballad called “On the Village Green,” that can be performed separately or as one cohesive composition.

Song recording Worthington school children and community members are singing background vocals both for live performances and for the song’s recording. Over 200 school children and adults attended lively recording sessions at John Schwab Studios to record their portion of the song. In addition to the Gnezda composition, the CD includes “Old Worthington Suite,” a musical composition written by Worthington resident Dr. Marshall Barnes. “Old Worthington Suite”

was performed for the first time in 1964 and tells the story of Worthington’s early days. The "Sounds of Worthington" CD is available for purchase at the Worthington Municipal Building, 6550 N. High Street.

On the "Sounds of Worthington" CD and during live performances, Gnezda is accompanied by violinist Arkadiy Gips. The addition of Gips, along with the children and community singers, creates a spectacular show. "The Bells of Worthington" and "On the Village Green" will be performed live for the last time during Founders Weekend during the StreetFest Grand Finale, October 25th. These songs celebrating the spirit of Worthington were also performed at the Homecoming Celebration, Ohio Chautauqua, Heritage Ball and debuted during the Founders Day Festival, October 19, 2002.

LYRICS:

The Bells of Worthington

On the busy highways…on the quiet streets…
In the doorways of our people…
On the city sidewalks…on the edge of town…
In the stores and in the steeples…
Music is the gift that they bring…

Let the bells of Worthington ring…
Let the bells of Worthington ring…

In the heat of summer…in the autumn air…
Any day in any season…
In the light of morning…in the dark of night…
Any time for any reason…
They all have a message to bring…

Let the bells of Worthington ring…
Let the bells of Worthington ring…

Let ‘em ring for kindness…let ‘em ring for health...
Let ‘em ring for those who can’t ring ‘em themselves...
Let ‘em ring for honor…let ‘em ring for pride…
Let ‘em ring for victory on a Friday night!…

Let the bells of Worthington ring…
Let the bells of Worthington ring…

Let ‘em ring for laughter…let ‘em ring for joy…
Let ‘em ring for celebration…

Let ‘em ring for freedom…let ‘em ring for peace…
Let ‘em ring for every nation…

Let ‘em ring for justice…let ‘em ring for truth...
Let ‘em ring for opportunity...

Let ‘em ring for friendship…let ‘em ring for love…
Let ‘em ring for our community…

Let ‘em ring for courage…let ‘em ring for hope…
Let ‘em ring for inspiration...

Let ’em ring for wisdom…let ‘em ring for youth…
Let ‘em ring for generations…

[Reprise:]
Let ‘em ring for you and let ‘em ring for me…
Let ‘em ring for everyone who has a dream…
Let ‘em ring for goodness…let ‘em ring inside…
Let ‘em ring for glory…let ‘em ring for life!…

(Repeat chorus)

On the Village Green

As I take a walk around the Village Green,
everywhere I wander there’s another memory.
Surrounded by the people I have known throughout the years –
the ones I still see often, and the ones no longer here…

When they took a walk around the Village Green,
those who came before us were the first to build a dream.
They left behind the lives they knew to find a better way
and gave to us a vision that’s still alive today…

On the Village Green – so much of yesterday is living.
On the Village Green – so peaceful and so free.
On the Village Green – always moving to a rhythm…
On the Village Green…

When they take a walk around the Village Green,
I hope my children’s children will feel the history.
I hope that they will gather here to laugh and dance and play,
and always see the beauty, the goodness and the grace…

On the Village Green – so much of yesterday is living.
On the Village Green – so peaceful and so free.
On the Village Green – always moving to a rhythm…
On the Village Green…
On the Village Green…
