The Bicentennial Wagon Train traveled through 10 counties – Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum, Licking, Franklin, Madison, Clark, Miami, Montgomery and Preble–primarily along the historic National Road, today U.S. 40, one of America’s most scenic byways. The eastern phase of the train left Martins Ferry on June 21 and arrived in Worthington on July 5, a trip of about 150 miles. The western phase left Columbus on July 6 and traveled 125 miles toward the western border of the state, ending on July 14 at New Paris near the Indiana border in Preble County. Along the way, participants had opportunities to celebrate significant people, places and events in Ohio history, to appreciate the transportation legacy of Ohio and take part in community celebrations. The train was an all-encompassing experience for those who participated, combining education, history and fun as it captured the pioneering spirit of the early settlement of Ohio.
