The shining symbol representing Worthington’s Bicentennial celebration in 2002-2003.
Finding the Right Logo Look A Bicentennial logo contest was held in 2000 to solicit designs from Worthington area residents for the Bicentennial logo. Approximately 100 entries were received and three finalists were selected. The final designs were displayed throughout the city and the public voted for their favorite. The winning entry was the Worthington Star quilting design, created by Worthington area resident Joe McAnarney. The Steering Committee chose Nina Smith’s entry "Building the Future with Pioneering Spirit" as the official slogan, which now makes up the bottom portion of the logo.
The Community Connection The red, blue and green Worthington Star holds a great deal of symbolism for the community. The design is based on the craft of quilting, which was brought to Worthington by settlers from New England in 1803. Early quilters had developed the simple nine-patch pattern known as the Ohio Star. McAnarney adapted the design by adding a distinctive four-square pattern in the center of the star to represent Worthington’s Village Green. The Village Green has been the center of Worthington’s activities since the community’s founding. It is one of the areas founders mapped out for their planned community before even arriving to this area. The inclusion of the Village Green symbol in the Worthington Star demonstrates our commitment to honoring our past, and building on the future based on the values and pioneering spirit of our founders.
