Gary Smith Worthington Classic

Sunday, June 9, 2019

5 Mile Run, 3 Mile Walk, 2 Mile Kids Race

The Gary Smith Worthington Classic was established in memory of Gary Smith, Worthington teacher and state championship Track and Cross Country coach. Though Smith’s teams achieved many victories, he was respected most for his integrity and compassionate commitment to young people. Smith believed in students’ possibilities, in giving them sound knowledge, supporting them during hard work, and letting each one know he or she had innate value. At Smith’s memorial service in 1998, athletes and parents conceived of this race in his honor.

Proceeds from The Gary Smith Worthington Classic are distributed in many directions. Scholarships for a male and a female Thomas Worthington Track/Cross country athlete are awarded each year. Because Gary spent much of his career teaching students for whom school was not always a comfortable place, a third scholarship, known as The Heart and Hurdle Award, is offered to students who have faced personal and school challenges. Donations are also made to local organizations that serve children with medical or physical needs.

Join us on a great course that takes participants through Worthington neighborhoods and on the beautiful Olentangy bike path, starting and finishing on the Thomas Worthington High School Track. Adult participants will receive a Gary Smith Worthington Classic shirt and mug. Awards will be given to the top 3 overall and age group finishers. The kids race starts and finishes on the track and travels to the flats and back. They will receive shirts, a favor and age-group awards.

Race partners are the City of Worthington, the Gary Smith Race & Charities Committee, and the Healthy Worthington Coalition.
